Talking About: Animals

You can use these talking points to discuss animal welfare issues with your children. Use your parental discretion when determining which topics are appropriate for your child. For additional support when you sign up for A Magic Penny event, we will provide you with talking points about the specific organization we are partnering with.

Animal Shelters

  • Some animals do not have owners to give them food and shelter…
  • Some animals are not healthy or safe…
  • There are shelters and centers that help rescue dogs, cats, and other animals…
  • Some animals live in a shelter until they find their “forever family…”
  • Many animal shelters heal and take care of rescued animals until they find owners…

Animal Abuse

  • Some animals who should be in the wild are taken out of their habitat and mistreated…
  • Sometimes pets are in unsafe homes…
  • Some pets are not looked after or are found alone with no collar/tag…
  • Sometimes an owner is a bully and hurts his/her pet…
  • Some bullies take wild animals in order to sell their fur, skin, or teeth…

Animal Euthanasia

(*Only if you feel your child is ready)

  • Rescued animals are sometimes sick or old…
  • If rescued from a bully, an animal may be scared or mean…
  • Some shelters decide to euthanize animals who can’t be healed or find owners…
  • “Euthanize” means allowing an animal to die…
  • Other ways of saying that is an animal was “put down” or “put to sleep…”
  • Some animal shelters decrease euthanasia by taking care of those animals until they find owners…

What We Can Do

  • We can donate food, toys, beds, and other items these animals need…
  • We can donate money that can be used to provide shelter, medicine, food, and whatever else the animals need…
  • We can buy fake leather and fur instead of items made by harming real animals…
  • We can learn about the right way to get a pet and to take care of a pet…
  • We can visit with rescued animals who are “family friendly” (not scared, mean, or unhealthy)…
  • We can foster or adopt a rescued animal if our family and house is ready…
