Talking About: Foster Care

You can use these talking points to discuss foster care with your children. Use your parental discretion when determining which topics are appropriate for your child. For additional support when you sign up for A Magic Penny event, we will provide you with talking points about the specific organization we are partnering with.

Foster Children

  • Sometimes a child’s parents are not able to take care of him/her…
  • Some children need a different parent or family to take care of them because their own parents can’t right now…
  • Some parents need to learn how to be better parents and how to raise their child safely…
  • Those children are “foster” children and they need a family or caregiver who is “temporary”…
  • Temporary means for a limited time, not forever…
  • All families have little problems from time to time, but a foster child comes from a family with bigger problems…
  • It is not safe or possible for foster children to live with their own family right now…

Foster Homes

  • Foster care is not a place where all foster children live together….
  • A child in foster care lives with a family in a home, just like other children…
  • Foster children stay with a new family until their parents are ready to take care of them…
  • Foster parents do just about everything a parent would do, like picking up the child from school and taking the child to sports practice…
  • The foster parents’ home is the child’s home, so the child sleeps there and spends weekends there…
  • Sometimes it is not possible for a foster child’s real parents to ever take care of them, so they are “adopted” and officially become a member in a new family…

What we can do

  • Children in foster care are just like you…
  • Foster kids go to school and birthday parties just like you…
  • The difference is that they are living somewhere new with different parents…
  • Moving into a new home might be scary or confusing to them…
  • We can bring them comfort by putting love into a bedtime bag…
  • Stuffed animals, books, nightlights, and toothbrushes can help a foster child sleep better…
  • Handmade cards and art can make a foster child feel special and safe…
