The Jewish Home for the Aging

Before each event, we encourage you to explain where you are going to your children.

Here are some suggested talking points to help your child know what to expect at the Los Angeles Jewish Home:

The Jewish Home

  • People who are very old often need help from nurses, aides, or doctors…
  • Some “seniors” cannot move around easily or cannot hear or see well…
  • It can be difficult or dangerous for a senior to live alone…
  • Sometimes seniors move into a special home with other seniors so people can help take care of them…
  • Those special homes are called “nursing homes,” “senior housing,” or “assisted living”…
  • The Jewish Home provides care for seniors, and many of them live there…

The Alzheimer Unit

  • The Jewish Home is very large and there are different parts of it…
  • We are going to a special section to meet seniors whose minds don’t work as well as they used to…
  • Those seniors have trouble remembering things, even something they said or did that day…
  • “Alzheimer’s Disease” and “dementia” are main causes of this memory trouble…
  • Even if a senior doesn’t remember a person or an activity, they still can enjoy those things very much…
  • In fact, activities like art, exercise, and gardening can help seniors in the Alzheimer Unit…
  • Seniors who live in the Alzheimer Unit love to have young visitors and do projects…
  • It’s fun to spend time with older people who have experienced so much in their long life, especially when you see how you lighten up their day…

Please Note: When we do art projects with seniors, our time together is rewarding to them as well as us. The seniors get to keep the final product of our activity together, as it a special gift to help them remember us. The wonderful feeling we get from giving, is what we take away with us.
