Lauren Alon, LCSW, Founder and Director of A Magic Penny
After reading stacks of letters, we chose one. A family whose sole request was food on the table for the holidays. Together my brothers and I gathered our allowance, and along with support from our parents, provided holiday meals to a family in need. This impactful childhood experience inspired a philanthropic lifestyle for my family and the creation of A Magic Penny.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, where I held my first volunteer and staff positions in Social Service agencies. In 1997, I graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Special Education and Rehabilitation, with a minor in Spanish. In 2001, I graduated from University of Southern California with a Masters in Social Work, and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2007.
Throughout my career I have specialized in mental health services to treat trauma in youth, families, and adults. Supporting the healing process in trauma victims has been a rewarding experience. My role as a mental health therapist treating trauma, while rewarding, was limited to healing versus prevention. It fueled my desire to make an impact on families with young children, be proactive in preventative services and create positive changes.
As The Founder and Director of A Magic Penny, it is my responsibility and delight to lead this organization in providing volunteer and charitable activities for families and children of all ages. My inspiration and determination to direct A Magic Penny mirrors our mission and vision, to empower young people to adopt a philanthropic lifestyle to endure throughout their lives.
Sharing this opportunity with parents, caregivers, and professionals in childcare is a very rewarding experience. My personal mission and the mission of A Magic Penny is one and the same; to provide volunteer opportunities that support trauma prevention, decreases environmental problems, and contributes to positive changes in the world, while simultaneously creating the next generation of philanthropists.
